Importing Generators to Nigeria: Power, Permits & Port Clearance

April 22, 2026· 9 min read

Nigeria is one of the largest generator markets in the world — the result of chronic grid unreliability that forces businesses, hospitals, hotels, factories, and data centres to maintain their own power supply. Demand for quality diesel generators, particularly European-sourced industrial sets from Cummins, Perkins, FG Wilson, and Volvo Penta, significantly outpaces what the local market can supply at competitive prices. This guide walks through everything you need to know about importing a diesel generator into Nigeria from Europe — from selecting the right kVA rating to clearing it through Lagos port.

Why Import from Europe?

European industrial generators — particularly Cummins-powered and Perkins-powered sets manufactured in the UK, Italy, and Germany — offer several advantages for Nigerian buyers:

  • Documented service history — hours metered, maintenance records available
  • Tier 2/Stage 3A emission-compliant engines — modern, clean-burning, fuel-efficient
  • Prime-rated output specifications (not just standby) — generators sold for European industrial use are rated honestly
  • Single CIF price to Lagos — machine, freight, insurance, and export documentation in one number
  • Shorter lead time than new factory orders — European stock ships in 2–4 weeks vs 12–20 weeks for new factory orders

Choosing the Right kVA for Your Application

The most common mistake in generator procurement is undersizing — buying a generator that can run at rated load but trips under surge loads from motors and compressors. A general rule: size the generator at 70–80% of its prime rating for your continuous load, leaving headroom for motor starting surges.

ApplicationLoad ProfileRecommended Size
Small office / retail (lighting, AC, computers)15–30 kW continuous40–60 kVA
Mid-size hotel (50–100 rooms)80–150 kW continuous150–250 kVA
Petrol station / filling station30–60 kW + compressors100–150 kVA
Hospital / clinic (theatre, ICU, X-ray)60–200 kW, priority load200–400 kVA
Factory / light manufacturing150–400 kW continuous400–600 kVA
Data centre / telecom base stationVariable, N+1 required250–1,000 kVA
Large industrial / oil and gas camp500 kW+1,000–2,000 kVA

For applications with significant motor loads (pumps, compressors, lifts), consult an electrical engineer for a proper load survey before ordering.

Generator Brands Available from European Stock

Cummins / FG Wilson

20 kVA – 2,500 kVA

UK-manufactured, widely serviced in Nigeria. Cummins has authorised dealers in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt with parts availability.

Perkins / Olympian

10 kVA – 2,000 kVA

Perkins engines are the most widely serviced in Nigeria — parts available in virtually every major city. Excellent choice for upcountry deployments.

Volvo Penta

100 kVA – 3,000 kVA

Premium industrial sets used in data centres, hospitals, and industrial facilities. High fuel efficiency, longer service intervals.

Caterpillar / Mantrac

20 kVA – 3,500 kVA

CAT generators offer strong local dealer support through Mantrac Nigeria. Excellent resale value. Premium price point.

SDMO / Kohler

10 kVA – 3,300 kVA

French-manufactured, widely exported to African markets. Good parts availability through SDMO's African distribution network.

Import Process: Step by Step

1

Open Form M (before shipment)

Nigeria mandates Form M for all imports above a value threshold. It must be opened with your Nigerian bank before the generator leaves Europe — not after. Required documents from your supplier: pro-forma invoice with HS code, complete technical description (brand, model, kVA rating, engine make, year of manufacture, hours run), and CIF value. Allow 3–7 working days for approval.

2

SON Pre-Shipment Inspection

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) requires a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) for imported generators above the SON threshold. The appointed inspection agent (INTERTEK, Bureau Veritas, or SGS depending on the country) inspects the machine at the European supplier's location and issues a Combined Certificate of Value and Origin (CCVO). Allow 5–10 days for scheduling and certificate issuance. A reputable supplier coordinates this for you.

3

Shipping to Lagos

Generators under 250 kVA typically ship in standard 20ft or 40ft containers. Open-top containers or flat-racks are used for larger sets or generators with tall canopies. Transit from European ports (Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg) to Lagos Apapa is 18–22 days. Your supplier should provide vessel name, voyage number, and ETA on departure.

4

Customs Clearance at Apapa / Tin Can

Customs duty for generators varies by HS code and kVA class — typically 5–20% import duty plus 7.5% VAT and applicable levies. Your Lagos-based clearing agent handles the Customs Entry through the Nigeria Customs Service Single Window, cross-referencing the Form M, CCVO, commercial invoice, packing list, and bill of lading. Mismatches between any of these documents cause delays — a good supplier eliminates this risk by providing consistent documentation from the start.

5

Port Release and Inland Haulage

After duty payment and NCS release, your clearing agent arranges exit from the terminal. Generators above 500 kVA typically require specialist heavy transport for oversize load routing. For generators in standard containers, haulage to Lagos or upcountry is straightforward — your clearing agent arranges this through their logistics network.

Price Guide: CIF Lagos (2026)

Generator SizeBrandCIF Lagos Price Range
100 kVAPerkins / FG Wilson$12,000–$22,000
200 kVACummins / FG Wilson$22,000–$38,000
400 kVACummins / Volvo Penta$40,000–$65,000
600 kVACummins / CAT$65,000–$95,000
1,000 kVACAT / Volvo Penta$110,000–$160,000

Prices are indicative for used European stock, 2020–2024, under 3,000 running hours. New machines and prime-condition low-hour sets command a premium.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Opening Form M after the goods ship — goods can be rejected at Apapa port
  • Buying standby-rated kVA for continuous use — standby ratings assume 10% load for short durations, not 24/7 operation
  • Skipping SON inspection — causes delays and possible rejection at port
  • Choosing a supplier who can't provide CCVO — you'll need to arrange this yourself, which is difficult after shipment
  • Not verifying engine hours — generator hours meters are easy to tamper with; insist on ECU data or maintenance records
  • Ignoring fuel consumption specs — Nigerian diesel costs are significant; a 400 kVA set burning 80L/hr vs 65L/hr is a real operational cost difference
