CAT D6 vs Komatsu D65: Which Bulldozer to Buy for East Africa?

If you're buying a bulldozer for road construction, mining, or earthworks in East Africa, the choice almost always comes down to two machines: the Caterpillar D6 or the Komatsu D65. Both are in the same weight class (approximately 20–22 tonnes), both dominate the used market from European suppliers, and both have strong track records in African conditions. But they're not interchangeable — and the right choice depends on factors that go well beyond the spec sheet.

Machine Overview

Caterpillar D6 (D6N / D6T / D6R series)

The CAT D6 is one of the most produced bulldozers in history and the default choice on construction and mining sites across East Africa. The current generation (D6T) produces around 165hp, features CAT's ACERT engine technology, and is available in XL, LGP (low ground pressure), and XW track configurations. Older D6R and D6N models are still widely available in the used European market at significantly lower price points than newer D6T machines.

Komatsu D65 (D65EX / D65PX / D65WX series)

The Komatsu D65 is the direct Komatsu competitor to the CAT D6, producing 168hp in the EX variant. The D65PX uses a wider, lower-ground-pressure track configuration suited to soft ground conditions. Komatsu's Sigmadozer blade design is generally regarded as more efficient for pushing large volumes of loose material, giving the D65 a productivity advantage in certain earthworks applications.

Parts Availability in East Africa — The Deciding Factor

For many buyers in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, parts availability is more important than any technical specification. A machine that breaks down and waits 6 weeks for parts costs far more than any purchase price premium. This is where CAT has a structural advantage in East Africa.

Caterpillar's dealer network in East Africa is extensive. Cat has authorised dealers in Nairobi, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, and Addis Ababa with warehoused parts inventory. Many common wear items — undercarriage, filters, hydraulic seals — can be sourced locally within days. CAT's global parts distribution also means air-shipped items from Europe arrive faster due to the dealer network's familiarity with the system.

Komatsu's dealer presence in East Africa is thinner. In Kenya, authorised Komatsu support exists but with less local parts inventory than CAT. In Ethiopia, local Komatsu authorised dealer coverage is more limited, meaning more parts need to be air-shipped from Europe or the Middle East — with longer wait times. Terrain Performance in East African Conditions

East Africa's terrain varies significantly — from Nairobi's red clay soils to Ethiopia's highland rocky terrain to Kenya's coastal sandy conditions. Both machines handle this range competently in standard configurations, but some specific differences matter:

• Rocky highland terrain (Ethiopia, Rift Valley)

  The CAT D6T's VPAT (Variable Pitch Angle Tilt) blade option is well-suited for rock pushing and ripping on road alignments. The D65's Sigmadozer blade excels in loose soil but is less efficient on consolidated rocky material.

• Soft and wet conditions (coastal Kenya, lake zones)

  Both machines offer low ground pressure track options — the CAT D6N LGP and Komatsu D65PX. The D65PX's wider tracks (915mm) give it a slight advantage in wet conditions compared to the D6N LGP (915mm as well — comparable).

• Red soil road construction (standard conditions)

  Both machines perform equivalently for standard cut-and-fill, clearing, and compaction work on KeNHA and ERA road projects. Operator preference and site familiarity often matter more than technical differences here.

Used Market Pricing (European Stock)

On the European used market, CAT D6 machines (D6R and D6T series, 2008–2018) typically command a 10–20% price premium over equivalent-hour Komatsu D65 machines. This premium reflects both brand recognition and stronger resale liquidity — CAT machines sell faster and retain value better in the East African market. If purchase price is the primary constraint, Komatsu D65 offers genuine value; if resale and parts support are priorities, the CAT premium is justified.
